Euereslea c.1050, Evreslei 1086 (Domesday Book). 'Wood or clearing of the wild boar, or of a man called Eofor'. Old English eofor or Old English personal name + leah.

Eversley Cross is one of five hamlets that together with, Eversley Centre, Eversley Street, Up Green and Lower Common form the parish of Everlsey. It's historical name as previously mentioned is derived from Eofors Leigh  (field of the wild boar) this is still remembered with a depiction of the wild boar on the village sign.

Associated with Eversley is the novelist and poet Charles Kingsley. Born in 1819 he is perhaps best remembered as the writer of "The Water Babies". Kingsley became the rector of Eversley in 1844 where he lived until his death in 1875.

A Little History of Eversley

This has been taken from a booklet written circa 1930 by C. Elizabeth Cottingham. I have tried to keep it as faithful as possible to the original. It is a brief but very interesting insight into Eversley's History.
